+ Material
Material is pleased to
present its sixth exhibition of 2008: Niki Johnson and Melissa
Farris: Moral Fiber. The exhibition will open with a reception for
the artist on Friday, August 1 from 6-8 pm. The exhibition will run
through August 29. Niki Johnson and Melissa Farris collaboratively
present Moral Fiber, an exhibition that stitches together
traditional women’s media with pointed socio-political commentary.
The exhibition will feature large-scale appliquéd portraiture as
well as miniature cross-stitch studies that investigate the ironic
relationships between American morality and the media. This body of
work continues both Johnson and Farris’ individual dialogs
concerning cultural ideologies while uniting the two under the genre
of domestic craft.
Material is located at 2553 Broad Avenue. Parking is
available on both the north and south sides of Broad Avenue.

Art Commission Announces Public Art Project in the University
District There will be a meeting at St. Luke’s United Methodist
Church located at 480 S. Highland on Saturday, July 26th from 11
a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to gather input from community members, which
will be used to inspire further public art in the University
District. The project involves a community driven series of highly
visible public art in the University District which is designed to
create a special sense of place and identity. The collaborative team
of neighborhood associations, artists and other neighborhood
stakeholders will develop a series of murals, banners, billboards,
and other public art projects over the next eighteen (18) months
that artistically express the identity of the University District
and help to strengthen a sense of place and pride in the community.
Follow-up phases of the project will include community art classes
for youth and the establishment of a “Community Art Center” for the
University District.
